In the program organized with though that attention should be given in addressing the root causes of crime than to the implementation of the capital punishment, people signed on the petition which will be delivered to US authority soon. Approximately 2000 signatures collected in the program that organized in the capital city Kathmandu.

Today, 139 countries from all regions of the world have abolished the death penalty in law or in practice and ‘only’ 25 countries carried out executions in 2008. According to Amnesty International, 93% of registered executions took place in five countries: China, Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the United States. Last year USA implemented 37 executions.

Every year 10th of October is marked as the Global Day against the Death Penalty by the World Coalition against the Death Penalty (in which Amnesty International is also a member). The coalition, established on 10 October 2003 aims to strengthen the international dimension of the struggle against capital punishment. Wherever the death penalty is in force, it contributes to reducing and, better still, definitively abolishing death sentences and executions. To do this, the Coalition facilitates the constitution and development of national and regional coalitions against the death penalty, leads lobbying actions towards international organizations and States, and organizes events which have an international impact. In the program, leaflets were distributed to clarify why AI Nepal chosen the issue of death penalty in USA. Every year when marking the day against death penalty, AI Nepal selects one country for the campaign. Last year it had selected issue of death penalty in India while it has already hold campaign on death penalty in China, Sudan and Iran in the previous years.
