Amnesty International Nepal, by organizing a public event in Kathmandu on 30 May, launched a new campaign called 'Demand Dignity' in Nepal. Demand Dignity is the campaign that launched by Amnesty International around the globe on 28 May to fight the human rights abuses that drive and deepen poverty. This global campaign is to give a voice to people living in deprivation will empower "prisoners of poverty" as previous campaigns of the organization empowered prisoners of conscience.
In a program that organized by AI Nepal at Basantapur in Kathmandu, on the 30 May, 30 people under 30 years of age wearing campaigning cloth marked (((Demand Dignity))) added their voice in a demonstration in participation of hundreds of other activist for 30 minutes at 11am local time.
The economic downturn has aggravated abuses, distracted attention from them and created new problems. In the name of security, human rights were trampled on. Now, in the name of economic recovery, they are being relegated to the back seat.
Demand Dignity is a long-term campaign that will focus on tackling exclusion, discrimination, marginalisation and poverty.
Amnesty International’s Demand Dignity campaign will seek to:
- empower people living in poverty to claim their rights
- seek accountability from governments and economic actors for abuses
- put human rights at the centre of efforts to eradicate poverty.
The campaign will focus on:
- slums, and call for an end to forced evictions.
- maternal mortality, and demand women’s right to sexual and reproductive health, including maternal health.
- extractive industries seeking corporate accountability for human rights abuses.
- respect for all human rights, and demand that the USA ratifies the UN Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and China ratifies the UN Covenant on Civil and Political rights.
Addressing the program, Chairperson of AI Nepal Hem Kumar Khadka said that AI Nepal will launch different thematic campaign highlighting Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in the near future.
